Early Saturday morning, sneakerheads and sneaker enthusiasts braced the cold Chicago air in an effort to score items from one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year, the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle collection. Camping out is definitely a ritual, with some folks waiting in line for up to two days in advance, but the Doernbecher release is special because it supports the children of OSHU Doernbecher Children’s Hopsital in Oregon. This year’s event was unique because it marked the first time the collection of footwear was available in both men’s and grade school sizes. To commemorate, Niketown Chicago displayed decorative boards featuring pictures of the child designers and information about them. At 7am, patrons were allowed into the store to purchase pairs from the collection in addition to learning more about the annual program. The Niketown Chicago staff worked quickly (and efficiently!) to get guests in and out in a timely manner. They were also gracious enough to have free breakfast treats from Panera Bread available, which went about as swiftly as the Doernbecher Air Jordan 4! I really enjoyed my time at the event – from meeting the staff to talking to the customers. Despite what everyone went through to obtain their shoes, they were all in good spirits, because we know that the children of Doernbecher Hospital are battling something more severe than the weather, and from their efforts they’ve given us something we’ll love and enjoy forever.
Special thanks to Jose, Monica, and the entire Niketown Chicago staff. See you next year!
Check out a TON of pictures after the jump!
