Social networking has allowed the opportunity to meet with a number of like-minded individuals who share your passion. Through Twitter, I was able to connect with Lemara, a grad student who has centered her dissertation around female sneaker aficionados and our place in the industry. Here, Lemara gives us a bit of insight on what this project is about:

The Invisible Women Project aims to collect and document the experiences of female sneaker aficionados across America. Sneaker culture it typically regarded as a hyper-masculine subculture although women are sneaker aficionados too, their participation is rarely acknowledged. Their participation is often marginalized or objectified. They battle to gain ‘aficionado’ status and recognition because of their gender. Yet, they too obsess, buy and collect sneakers with the same passion for the culture and consumerism as other male sneaker aficionado’s. Female sneaker aficionados don’t wear kicks because of their fitness capabilities and the claim that they can tone and shape a woman’s body. They wear them because they want to stand out, to turn heads and have someone recognize the absolute fire on your feet and ask the proverbial question “YO! Where’d you get those!”

This research will give women a platform to speak about their experiences and give them an opportunity to voice their insights on what it is like to be a female sneaker head . Questions range from asking: whether they believe there are any gender barriers and assumptions about women in sneaker culture? Do brands always cater to their footwear needs? Does the marketing and advertising by major brands tend to exclude or include female sneaker consumers? How many pairs do they possess and what does sneaker culture mean to them?

Women who wear sneakers highlights greater theoretical questions around gender and consumption, gender and subcultures and societies expectations of how women should dress and perform their identity.

A yes yes ya’ll…who holds the small footers down like sneakHerbox? Rhetorical question but, we know the answer! Earlier today we posted images of the upcoming GS All-Star Game Nike Kobe VII and now we have pics of the Nike Lebron 9 ASG. The “Big Bang” LB9 will in fact coming in a grade school run and I’m sure the small footers are going to love this colorway. Nike Kobe VII GS ASG “Galaxy” – Available Now

All my sneaker people out there have been keeping up to date with the frenzy that is sure to ensure this weekend, with Nike planning to release at least 7 different sneakers in celebration of the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. For the most part, we haven’t heard much about what would be available in grade school sizes, if any, until now. It seems as though a pair of ASG Kobe VII’s have popped up on the interwebs in a boys size 6. This is great news for small footers like myself who SERIOUSLY want to cop those and hopefully this foreshadows the prospect of more of this year’s ASG Nike line-up being available in GS sizes. Time will most certainly tell and sneakHerbox will keep you updated so stay tuned. In the meantime, head over to eBay to try your luck or hang tight til release day, Friday, February 24th. After all the chaos surrounding last year’s Concord 11 Holiday release, you’d think JB would take a little break from the model at least til December. Don’t be fooled, the hype continues to build as a brand new retro 11 low colorway is set to drop in May. The white and varsity red mash-up mimicks a clash between “Columbia” and “Bred” 11s but in a low profile. The pair you see above is in grade school sizes, and as we all know, every pair looks better in a smaller size. It’s that time again ladies (and gents who can at least appreciate a good read and a solid collection). Time for another brand new sneakHer eye candy interview! This week, I spoke with Bryant Digital, a fellow Midwesterner who has made a name for himself through his photography. We discuss how his love for art and sneakers came to be and his opinion on the female sneaker movement. First, tell us about who you are and how you came to be known in the sneaker community.

Im Bryant, From Lansing, Michigan. Basically Ive gotten known in the sneaker community after I started to incorporate sneakers into my photography…To depict someones favorite sneaker, in a clean, sometimes artistic photo, really brings alot of sneaker collectors joy. Some have even order prints from me to hang in their homes. So thats mainly how I got out there with a little buzz and I suppose my collection is ok as well, lol.

Many people have seen your work featured in Sole Collector magazine and spotlighted on Solecollector.com, tell us how those opportunities came about.

For the longest, Ive seen people on sites reference ISS (which is now solecollector), in everything sneaker related. So after a while, I gave in and joined. Stumbled across the “art and photography” section, and from there I fell in love, posted lots of my work and I guess you can say the right people took notice. With the magazine, I just email them every picture I take, in hopes of being in the next issue, lol and for 5 issues straight, it hasn’t failed me yet.

Of the sneaker photos you’ve taken, which is your favorite?

No brainer. This photo is what started it all really. Not to mention, its of my all time favorite sneaker. The first sneaker I’ve ever bought with my hard earned money. (The 2001 retro, not the countdown pack seen in photo.)

To what or whom would you attribute your love for sneakers?

To those out there who, like me, probably loved sneakers when they were younger, but wasnt fortunate enough to have a collection, due to financial reasons, or parents, ect ect. Because for these reasons, I wasnt able to keep a steady collection. Now that I’m older and more financially stable, I can get all the sneakers I use to want, but couldn’t. So I know its others like me out there. When you’re passionate about something, it’ll happen for you.

Being from the Midwest, how would you describe the growth (if any) of the sneaker culture in this part of the country?

Shockingly is growing, slowly but surely. Not as many as New York, D.C. and Cali, but I’m meeting new sneaker collectors around the way pretty often.

What about the female sneaker movement in the Midwest?

Well to be honest, I see very very few female sneaker collectors around here. I see some high school girls that just buy the newest jordans at the time, but wouldn’t label them collectors, or part of the culture. Sad tho, but as soon as I run into a girl with a pair of authentic “Unkle” SBs on, she’ll instantly become my good friend, lol.

Would you be more inclined to date someone with an affection for sneakers or someone totally un-involved with the culture?

When it comes to this, I have no preference. I equally like both, however with a girl that is as passionate about sneakers as me, we’ll need more closest space in our home as to avoid confrontation, lol

Outside of kicks, what are some of your other interests?

NERD ALERT! Photography, Harry Potter, My Toy collection, Sticker Collection, Spongebob, X-box (but only games that allow me to kill humans very violently), just to name a few.

What are three essentials you carry with you everyday?

Easy. iPhone, My Canon SD1300 IS, and a pack of EXTRA Spearmint gum.

Nike WMNS Air Max 95 – Wolf Grey/White – Purple

The sneakHerbox ladies were all too excited when the max air units returned to the women’s Air Max 95 last year and we have appreciated the Swoosh going back to the essence. We have, however, noticed the significant spike in price – granted with more technology comes a higher price point but still, seems like it’s a bit much. Nevertheless, new colorways continue to drop for the ladies, including the above-pictured Wolf Grey/Purple pair. This colorway is definitely muted, but seasonably refreshing. Air Jordan 1 Phat GS – Fall 2012 Colorways

The Air Jordan 1 continues to dominate the retro spectrum with more and more colorways dropping each month. This Fall we can expect to see a trio of new Air Jordan 1 Phat colorways hit stores for the small footed only. For your first look, you will see a Black/Cool Grey color-up that looks somewhat like a reverse “Shadow Grey” attempt, a Grey/Black/Fireberry pink look and a Metallic Gold/Matte Silver colorway which is very reminiscent of the grade-school exclusive “Dream Team” Air Jordan 1 from 2008, although the newer version will tote a clear glitter outsole. Nike WMNS Skinny Dunk High – Black Anthracite

It’s going to be a ‘Skinny Dunk’ kind of year as we have seen a number of new colorways since January.
